At first I wanted to say that I was srepuisrd, but I think impressed is a more appropriate word. Not an easy thing to draw, to share, to read about, or to talk about but it’s a very important, albeit horrible, coda to Nathan Hale’s treatment at the hands of the British Army in New York. Since it (historically) ends up influencing a lot of people, and since it is so often glossed over in other (more sanitized) discussions about Nathan Hale, I am glad you decided to put it on the record here, Lora. In his book about Nathan Hale, George Dudley Seymour discussed this very topic under the heading A Grisly Custom of War, and that’s exactly what it is. A stark and sudden reminder that history isn’t neat and tidy.
