You may wish to correct this. Other than this, the article was well written and interesting.

Comment on Whittaker Chambers by Kavya https://historyofspies.com/whittaker-chambers/#comment-934 Sat, 05 Sep 2015 21:00:43 +0000 http://historyofspies.com/?p=1904#comment-934 Oh wow. At first I wanted to say that I was srepuisrd, but I think impressed is a more appropriate word. Not an easy thing to draw, to share, to read about, or to talk about but it’s a very important, albeit horrible, coda to Nathan Hale’s treatment at the hands of the British Army in New York. Since it (historically) ends up influencing a lot of people, and since it is so often glossed over in other (more sanitized) discussions about Nathan Hale, I am glad you decided to put it on the record here, Lora. In his book about Nathan Hale, George Dudley Seymour discussed this very topic under the heading A Grisly Custom of War, and that’s exactly what it is. A stark and sudden reminder that history isn’t neat and tidy.

For example, “Treason in Blood” by Anthony Cave Brown.

Arnold’s Treasonous papers were found by three militiamen that intercepted British Major John Andre as he was traveling in disguise. Tallmadge got word of the incriminating documents and then understood what might be afoot. He was unable to act fast enough to prevent word getting back to Arnold that the plot had been foiled. Thus, Arnold escaped. Much of the speculation regarding the Culper Ring discovery of the plot was later propounded without evidence by Tallmadge who sought to downplay the acts of the three militiamen who were hailed as patriots and to claim some of the credit for himself and his spies. Tallmadge hated that he and his spies that risked so much danger were being upstaged by three militiamen that just were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
